What is monsoon?

Kerala is a tropical landscape with a humid summer of 4 months, a mild winter spanning between mid-November to mid-January, and an intensive two-phased rainy season of six months between Mid-May to Mid-November. Intermittent short spells in April and May happen as summer showers. South-west monsoon the primary rainy season of the Indian sub-continent enters India around the first week from the southern tip of Kerala and ascends upwards throughout the western and eastern coasts, Deccan Plateau, and beyond. Monsoon stays on till the end of August from when Retreat Monsoon rains propelled by the north-eastern winds take on and last until mid-November. Kerala in Ayurveda is based and is aligned to these climatic changes, of which the south-west monsoon is important, especially in its later part when the sun transition to Dakshinayana, the shift from the harsh winter solstice to the mild summer solstice and is known as Karkitakam locally.  Rainy season peaks between June, July, and August. On the 17th of July, in the middle of the season, the Sun changes are known as Karkaataka Sankranthi and are heralded as the start of a month-long traditional ritualistic lifestyle of detoxification and rejuvenation of the body, mind, and soul. Ayurveda treatments, special diets, religious ceremonies, prayers, and self-care regimens are part of the Kerala monsoon lifestyle. This helps the person and society to gear up for the future and stay healthy

Global warming, climatic changes, and the related sequel has brought in drastic changes in the rain pattern. The fragile ecosystem has paved the way for rain-related floods and landslide calamities. A return to nature is the solution ahead for humankind and re-inventing the Karkitakam lifestyle is a major milestone in this regard

What are monsoon herbs?

Summer showers drench the parched earth and provide the signal for the dormant seeds of the tropical meadows to soak, germinate, break the earth and sprout out with life. These herbs are nurtured with the start of monsoons and by mid-July when Karkitakam starts these herbs create bio-diverse green tropical flowering meadows in every available space. These succulent herbs are resilient and hence withstand the rains and winds. Indigenous Ayurveda wisdom of Kerala ancestors has researched and identified ten herbs among them to be used as medicines to detoxify each organ system in the human body

These assorted 10 herbs are named Dashapushpam, translated as flowers. The name goes so, as the herbs are harvested at the flowering stage using the flowers are the distinguished identifying factor, though small or inconspicuous. The inflorescence of these herbs with the terminal leaves is used by ladies to adorn the hair during the month. A scientific analysis of each of these herbs gives a picture of their importance in healthcare

What are the benefits of using and growing Dashapushpam?

Monsoon is the season of heavy rains, communicable diseases, and infectious viral fevers, the numbers and spread is increasing with each passing year. Environmental detoxification is important while individual detoxification is more important. Dashapushpam if used internally as food, in homes to place and to smoke, in gardens to landscape, and on fields and roadsides as meadows can create a shield of anti-toxicity and immunity between the germs, their vectors, and the community. Each of these herbs has distinct medicinal properties. These are

Why Ayurveda is special?

Ayurveda is the science of life and the healthcare system that promotes healthy living and a preventive lifestyle. Ayurveda considers every person as an independent entity and a specific combination of Tridoshas. Hence health status of every person is unique so also is healthcare. Even though a protocol exists for a particular mode of treatment or medicine, the same is  customized after evaluating the health and other related factors of the user

5 Ps: Unique features of Ayurveda healthcare

  • Personalized Healthcare Protocol: Personal profile of the individual including the constitution, age, genetic makeup, living environment, lifestyle, and many other markers are evaluated to design a personalized health protocol for a person.
  • Preventive Healthcare: Preventive Healthcare is to establish wellness in society. Ayurveda through its Swasthavrutha principles has always emphasized prevention and has stressed the need for health education on Dinacharya-daily routine, Rutucharya-seasonal regimen, Aahara-healthy food, Nidra-sleep, Vyayama-exercise, Vegadharana-udeerana-addressing the physical and mental natural urges, Sadvrutha-social conduct. The awareness and practice help to reduce the risk factors and hence assure primary prevention. Through health education, early detection of disease and morbidity reduction is possible, and hence secondary prevention is assured. Ayurveda health education and implementation in all homes every day improve the quality of life of both sick and healthy people which is tertiary prevention. “
  • Promotive Healthcare: Promotive healthcare is to attain optimum health with optimum immunity and a healthy sound mind. Ayurveda has specialties of Rasayana and Vajeekarana for optimum health and vitality.
  • Predictive Healthcare: the knowledge of Prakruthi or analysis of the genetic makeup of a person helps to create a personal health profile and to predict the possible risk factors based on the Dosha status of the person. This helps to design a lifestyle to prevent or mitigate a probable disease occurrence. For example, osteoarthritis is a probability in a Vataprakruthi person which if known earlier can be prevented or mitigated with proper lifestyle modifications and preventive therapies.
  • Participatory Healthcare: Ayurveda attributes complete healthcare to the participation and action of four elements of an efficient doctor, effective medicine, an empathetic attendant, and more than all a trusting patient. Persons are to be equipped to be knowledgeable about their healthcare and transform them into expert patients enabled experience of their health status. What is healthy ageing?

WHO defines Healthy ageing as creating the environments and opportunities that enable people to be and do what they value throughout their lives. Ageing is a natural process and staying 10 years younger in health status compared to actual age may be termed healthy ageing. One cannot expect the same health status of the 20s in the fifties, but one can expect the health of the 40s if the lifestyle is healthy and as per Ayurveda standards

What is the branch of Ayurveda that deals with ageing and its management?

Jarachikitsa or Rasayana Chikitsa is a branch of Ayurveda that deals with ageing and the management of ageing. Cleansing and nourishment of tissues are part of the treatment process in Jarachikitsa

What is functional ability of healthy ageing?

Functional ability is defined as a person’s capabilities to meet basic needs, learn, grow, make decisions, be mobile, build and maintain relationships and contribute to society. Healthy ageing is the process of developing and maintaining the functional ability that enables well-being in older age Functional ability is measured in terms of the intrinsic capacity of the individual, relevant environmental characteristics and the interaction between them. The intrinsic capacity of a person is the mental and physical capacities that include daily life activities such as the ability to walk, think, see, hear and remember and is dependent on factors such as the presence of diseases, injuries and age-related changes

What are the common changes in old age and what are the healthy means to address them?

Heart and blood vessels: Stiffening of the blood vessels causes the heart to work harder to pump blood leading to high blood pressure (hypertension) and other heart-related problems. Moderate physical activity, healthy Ayurveda principles-based diet, healthy habits, stress management and good sleep help in reducing the risk

Musculoskeletal System: Bones weaken, height is reduced, fracture possibility increases and muscles lose strength, endurance and flexibility leading to problems in coordination, stability and balance. Enough protein, Vitamin D3 and calcium along with moderate physical activity help to keep the system healthy. Ayurveda external therapies are the best option

Digestive System: Constipation and bloating are the main problems due to a sedentary lifestyle, weakened enzymes and other medical conditions. A healthy diet, healthy eating habits and enough water are the remedies

Urinary System: Increased frequency of urination and incontinence are common problems. The tendency may disturb sleep also.  A healthy diet, regular bowel movement, reducing bladder irritants like alcohol and regular Kegel exercises are the preventive measures. Yoga postures like Mahabandha are very useful in the condition

Brain Functions: Changes in the brain can lead to forgetfulness and decreased cognition. Staying socially active, mentally alert, regular engagement and a healthy daily routine can help retain good brain function. A spoon of cow ghee in die is very helpful for brain functions as well as joint health

Eyesight and Hearing: Cataracts, glaucoma and other eye diseases affect people at that age. Hearing issues include diminished hearing are common issues. The practice of regular Ayurveda Dinacharya helps in managing the condition

Teeth and Oral Health:  Gaping, cavities, loosening of gums, dryness and other teeth issues are common age-related changes.   Regular brushing twice daily, flossing once a day, Kavalagraha, Oral massage and regular dental check-ups help manage teeth issues

Skin: Skin thins, dries up and loses elasticity and glow. Sagging, wrinkling, age spot and skin tags are signs of ageing.  Regular Abhyangam, enough water and a healthy diet are the preventive means

Weight Management: Balancing nutrition and weight through diet is a major challenge. Decreased physical activity also contributes. Hormonal balance, Proper daily routine, regular moderate physical activity and a  healthy diet with vegetables, fruits, whole grains, high-fibre foods and lean meat help to manage weight

Sexuality: Cultural and social environment, vaginal dryness in women, erectile dysfunction in men and physical weakness contribute to reduced sexual activity. It is important to stay sexually active. Physical intimacy without intercourse, foreplay, regular exercise and other means helps to stay sexually active and feel young

Emotional Health: Empty nest syndrome, changes in the family, illnesses, losing loved ones and the need to limit physical activities and profession may contribute to emotional vulnerability. Hormonal changes are also culprits. Active lifestyle, staying connected and increased engagement with partners help to manage the crisis

Ageing is a natural process that is not preventable. Acceptance and living healthily are the keys to happy healthy old age. Ayurveda is one of the promotive health care systems for healthy ageing

Most of these get corrected on their own while others can be corrected with simple home remedies. Any ailment that does not get corrected within half a day of taking a home remedy requires medical attention. What are the symptoms of common cold?

Change of weather always brings in attacks of cold with it. Viral cold attacks are very common these days. Common symptoms include itching of the nose tip, sneezing, heavy-headedness, blockage of ears and nose,  watering of the eyes, sore throat, hoarse voice, headache, mild fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, and disturbed sleep. Few occasions present with an earache, toothache, etc. It is always to understand the symptoms and manage the situation with simple home remedies and proper rest

When to seek medical attention for the common cold?

Monitoring is required to see that the symptoms do not progress. If they do so medical advice and care have to be considered. Over medication for a simple cold is better avoided. The three principles to take care of cold is to have the right food, stay warm, and take adequate rest. Extreme symptoms of cold are severe throat pain, severe ear ache, splitting headache, high fever, continuous cough, and extreme fatigue. These are to be attended immediately by a doctor to avoid complications like pneumonia

How to take steam inhalation?

For ages cold has been managed through steam inhalation. Plain steam and herb infused fortified steams are used to treat cold. The most efficient and user-friendly steam inhalation device is a wide-mouthed common kitchen vessel with boiling water in it. Steam is inhaled by covering the head to retain the steam inside. Inhaling through the mouth and exhaling through the nose and vice versa is the best means to take steam inhalation. Take steam till you break out into sweat all over the neck and face. It is always good to have intermittent gaps between bouts of inhalation. This eases the strain on the neck and also prevents the facial skin from getting irritated. Do not add any balms into the steam water

What to apply before and after steam inhalation?

Apply any cold balm with mint, lemon grass oil, or camphor on the forehead and warm sesame oil on the face before steam inhalation. Apply the balm and massage the forehead, above the eyebrows, above the nose, on the nose bridge, and the ala of the nose gently. In other areas of the face sesame oil or any cream may be used as a precaution for a possible burn and dehydration. Once you break out into sweat dab the face clean, sip a cup of warm water, and relax. While you sit with your eyes closed a herbal pack of turmeric and coriander powder mixed with warm lemon juice can be applied on the forehead for half an hour to get better results.

What herbs can be used for steam inhalation?

Tulsi leaves, (holy basil Ocimum sanctum), crushed black pepper, radish leaves, mint leaves, rosemary, eucalyptus leaves, cedar leaves, pine leaves, betel leaves, crushed ajwain seeds (betel leaf Piper betel) or a handful of diced cabbage may be used for steaming. Singularly or together. Any herb with a volatile oil is suitable for steam inhalation. Locally available fresh herbs like chrysanthemum, etc. can also be tried for steaming

What Ayurveda medicines are useful for steam inhalation?

Rasnadi Choornam, Karpooradi Choornam, Panchagandha Choornam, Trikatu Choornam, Karutha Vattu, Halin drops, etc. may be used for the purpose only with advice and prescription from an Ayurveda doctor

How does steam inhalation work?

The moist, warm steam helps to ease irritation along the respiratory tract right from the nose to the lungs. It reduces the swelling in the blood vessels and mucus membranes in the nasal passages. The moisture also helps to loosen and thin the mucus accumulated in the sinuses and enables easy drainage of mucus. The result is decongestion and easy breathing

What care should be taken while having steam inhalation?

Be careful as you are handling boiling water and you may scald to various degrees. Do not steam after a meal. Do not steam while you are very hungry or sleepy. Consult your doctor if you have diseases like diabetes, heart ailments, hormonal issues, vertigo, etc.

Ayurveda Rutucharya Seasonal regimen
Ayurveda lifestyle for health and wellness

What is the meaning of Rutu with respect to Ayurveda?

Rutu means season. The cyclical climate changes that happen in a year are classified into seasons and named as Rutu in Ayurveda. Classic textbooks start the Rutu cycle based on the Winter and Summer solstices or Dakshinayana and Uttarayana. Uttarayana comprises 3 Rutus or seasons Shishira-Winter (Mid-January-Mid March), Vasantha-Spring (Mid-March- Mid May), and Greeshma-Summer (Mid-May-Mid  July). Dakshinayana comprises 3 seasons Varsha-Rainy season (Mid-July-Mid-September), Sharat-Autumn (Mid-September-Mid-November), and Hemantha-Fall (Mid-November-Mid January). This classification is based on the temperate climatic zone above the Tropic of Cancer. The tropical climate basically has only three seasons, 4 month-long Vasantha-Greeshma- Summer (February-May), 5 months-long Varsha-Sharat-Monsoon Rains (June-October), and a short 3-month-long Hemantha-Moderate Winter (November-January)

What is Rutucharya?

Rutuacharya means seasonal regimen which involves lifestyle and diet adaptations to suit the seasonal climatic changes a person and community has to make so as to stay healthy and safe. Charya means disciplined routine or practice

What is Rutu Sandhi?

Rutu Sandhi is the transition period when the climate of the existing season weans and the features of the upcoming season slowly gain momentum.  The two weeks, the last week of the previous season and the first week of the ensuing season is called Rutusandhi. This is the buffer period when individuals and communities have to slowly reduce the lifestyle changes of the existing season and start practicing the changes required for the coming season in their diet and lifestyle

What is Rutu Shodhana? What is the importance of Rutushodhana?

Rutushodhana is the observance of the apt Panchakarma procedure to prevent disease precipitated by the seasonal changes and promote health. Rutu shodhana is the detoxification to be followed in order to prevent the disease and as a healthy lifestyle practice. The process helps to manage the seasonal pathological changes that have happened in the body so that they do not escalate to a full-blown disease condition. For example, after a winter, if the sinuses are decongested, an episode of sinusitis can be prevented in summer. Rutucharya, in Ayurveda terms is a way of life to achieve the state of health which is dosha balance by following Ayurveda health principles and guidelines

Who should do Rutushodhana?

All people, irrespective of whether they are patients or healthy persons should follow Rutushodhana according to the seasons of the place they are living. Rutushodhana should always be done as per the prescription of a competent Ayurveda doctor, as prescriptions are always personalized based on health condition and season of the place

How many Rutusandhis are to be observed? What Rutusodhana has to be followed in each?

Sharat-Hemanta Rutusandhi: Abhyanga-warm oil application on the body, Murdhnitaila-head oil application, Avagahasweda-steam and sitz bath, Vimardhana-systematised pressure massage, Utsadana-herbal powder massage, Anjana-medicated eyeliner, and some other special procedures are advised as part of Rutushodhana in this Rutusandhi srotas. These procedures help to reduce the health issues that can affect during the following winter as well as remove the stress and strain of  the past days

Hemanta-Shishira Rutusandhi: Abhyanga and Swedana should be regularly followed along with the procedures advised for Sharat-Hemanta Rutusandhi

Shirisha-Vasantha Rutusandhi: Vamana-induced emesis, Nasya-nasal drops, Niroohavasti-medicated decoction enema, Kavalagraham-medicated herbal gargling, Utsaadanam-herbal powder massage,  Vyayama-exercise, Anjana-medicated eyeliner, and Teekshnadhooma-medicated fume inhalation are the Panchakarma procedures advised. Hot water is advised for all purposes.

Vasantha-Greeshma Rutusandhi: Soothing and calming Panchakarma therapies like Thiktaksheeradhara-bitter medicated milk irrigation and other procedures. Since this is a sensitive Rutusandhi, a customized Panchakarma process is advised

Greeshma-Varsha Rutusandhi: Preparatory purification including Poorvakarma,-preparatory procedures followed by Virechana-medicated induced purgation, and  Asthapanavasthi-medicated oil/ghee/meat soup/animal fat enema are the Panchakarma procedures advised during the Rutusandhi

Varsha-Sharat Rutusandhi: Thiktaghrita Snehapana-systematic ingestion of bitter medicated fat, Sheetha Kashaya Virechana-induced controlled purgation with specific cold potency bitter drugs, and Raktamokshana-controlled bloodletting. properly should proceed thus; in the first place to consider the seasons of the year and what effect each of them produces.”

What are the benefits of Rutushodhana? Which diseases are prevented?

Different types of communicable, infectious, and non-infectious fevers, metabolic disorders, blood disorders, skin diseases, allergies, renal calculi, gall stones, arthritic diseases, and digestive disorders are a few diseases that can be prevented or mitigated with Rutushodhana Panchakarma. Apart from disease prevention Rutushodhana helps in detoxification, vitalization, and rejuvenation of the person as well as negating the health issues arising out of the day-to-day activities of life. Rutusandhi also is very potential in ensuring the sexual and reproductive health of the person. For proper Rutushodhana, the person should know the importance and has to seek professional care from a competent authority on Ayurveda
