FAQs on Ayurveda Post Natal Care-Ayurveda Prasavaraksha

What are the physical, mental and emotional changes that happen after childbirth?

Childbirth is a natural process wherein the body undergoes a series of changes that start with pregnancy and continue for months after childbirth. During pregnancy the changes are expansive while after childbirth the changes are contracting and reversion. The first 3 months or 90 days after childbirth are crucial as this is the period when the mother acclimatizes herself to the routine of nursing, regaining health and childcare with active support from the family. Physically, the expanded uterus contracts back to its normal position as also the stretched and strained joints, ligaments, muscles and tendons regain strength and tone. Mentally the mother overcomes the struggle of adapting to the growing demands as she strategizes herself emotionally to the needs and learns to balance the baby care, existent family responsibilities and very importantly her profession

Which are the common Ayurveda medicines and oils used after delivery?

Dhanwantaram Kashayam, Dasamoolajeerakarishtam, Panchakola Choornam, Ajamamsarasyanam, Nalpamaram, Dhanwantaram Thailam, Pinda Thailam, bathing water boiled with herbal leaves, etc. are used as part of post-natal care in Ayurveda.  These are to be prescribed by a qualified Ayurveda doctor after a detailed assessment of the mother and baby. The treatment should always be performed by trained therapists under the strict supervision of doctors so as to avoid complications

What are the precautions to be taken during Ayurveda post-natal care?

Strictly adhere to doctor’s advice and instructions regarding food, medicine, diet, exercises and routine. Any changes should be with the knowledge and approval of your doctor. Each person is different. Each childbirth is unique. The care also should be tailormade considering and evaluating the person’s constitution, health condition, baby health, lifestyle, status of delivery, associated illnesses, prone illnesses, professional and domestic demands and many other factors. The mother and baby are delicate physically and mentally. Hence a supportive protective empathetic care is to be ensured by the family

What is a standard diet following a normal and caesarian section delivery?

A balanced nutritious fresh cooked warm light diet pattern is advisable during the first three months of post- natal care. Meat and dairy (except spiced cow ghee, milk and cooked buttermilk) are better avoided for first 2 weeks after delivery. Green gram is the preferred lentil. Spices like cumin, turmeric, fenugreek, pepper, long pepper, asafetida, garlic, onions, etc. are to be included in food in moderation. Gourds and greens are good especially snake gourd, fenugreek leaves, moringa leaves and dill leaves. Drink 3-4 liters of warm medicated water spaced throughout the day. In case of caesarian section  food that is gassy has to be totally avoided. Spices are also avoided so as to prevent gastritis associated with prophylactic antibiotics

When is it best to start baby bathing?

A healthy baby may be sponge bathed from Day 1 itself. However, for a complete oil massage and bathing it is better to wait till the cord stump falls off and the area is healed. Oil bath and sponging may be alternated. Pat dry the baby and see that there is no remnants of oil or moisture on the body after bath. Massage the head with little and avoid dripping. Apply a paste of herbal medicines like sandal, vacha, etc. after baby bath. Use warm water medicated with Tulasi, Nalpamaram, etc. for bathing the baby. Consult your doctor for the right choice of oil and herbs. In conditions of chest infections, cold, infantile jaundice, low birth weight and other concerns bathing, if advised should be under medical instructions

What is a general protocol of Ayurveda post-natal care?

Though tailormade, the general protocol for first 3 weeks may involve an Abhyangam oil massage, powder massage Udvartanam, special herbal bath Vedkuli, abdominal bandage Kettu, herbal sitz bath Avagaham and genital care Yonidhoopanam. In later weeks therapies for pelvic care, abdominal tone, genital care, skin tone, muscle tone and strengthening may be done.
